Dr. James Katz is a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in cornea, cataract and refractive surgery. He serves as the medical director of the Golf Laser Vision Center in Chicago. He has been credited with numerous publications and research projects and speaks regularly at medical conferences both internationally and throughout the United States. Dr. Katz is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology Refractive Surgery Panel for Preferred Practice Patterns. He is also the recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Achievement Award.
Dr. Katz helped develop the sustainable international Project Vietnam, where he helped build clinics and trained Vietnamese ophthalmologists using current cataract phacoemulsification techniques.
Dr. Katz received his medical degree from the University of Illinois and completed his residency at the Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary. He fulfilled a one-year advanced fellowship in cornea, complex cataract and refractive surgery at the University of Utah, Moran Eye Center and the Casebeer International Eye Center. During his training, Dr. Katz was involved in the FDA clinical trials for the approval of LASIK. .
Presently, Dr. Katz is involved in the FDA clinical trial for the Refocus Scleral Implants for the reduction of presbyopia as well as the TrueVision 3D Guidance System integrating the i-Optics Cassini device for the accurate alignment of toric intraocular lenses. He was also involved in the FDA clinical trial of the AMO Visiogen Synchrony accommodating intraocular lens as well as the clinical evaluation of the Ocular Therapeutix ReSure Sealant for sealing clear corneal incisions following cataract surgery. .
Dr. Katz participated in the development of the CheckedUp Digital Management Mobile Health Platform for education of cataract patients. He was an investigator for the Endoserter (Ocular Systems Inc) DSAEK corneal inserter. He also was involved in instrument design and modification of multiple IOL injector systems, toric IOL alignment markers, novel phaco and I/A tip designs, as well as disposable micro-incision keratomes. He participated in the clinical evaluation of the Acrysof Toric IOL and Intrepid Micro-coaxial System. .
Dr. Katz has served as Course Director for multiple Continuing Professional Education (advanced surgical management of cataract) programs for ophthalmology resident medical education, as well as Course Director for Acrysof ReSTOR Physician Certification Courses. .
